Day 17

54. Netherlands vs. Slovakia- 2-1 Netherlands

This game wasn't as close as the score says, the last minute penalty by Slovakia made it respectable. The game and all of the games so far haven't gone as many have expected for the Netherlands. Many expect the Netherlands to blow everyone away with their flashy play, but they have been more economical this World Cup. They have the flashes of attacking prowess, but not as they have in the past. Now that they have won each game and advanced they will meet their first big test of the tournament.

55. Brazil vs. Chile- 3-0 Brazil

I missed this game, so I won't talk too much about it other than Chile's offensive attack wouldn't do without defending. Which they didn't do much of. Brazil will now move on to face the Netherlands, the most interesting game so far. It will pit two of the top teams in the tournament against each other and give the winner a clearer patch to the final. Should be a good one, and 6 for 6 so far.

Day 16

52. Germany vs. England- 4-1 Germany

I have been high on Germany before it started and even I didn't see this one coming. The first goal was due to some shaky defending by England and some determination by Klose, after that it got weird. Another German goal put them up 2-0 but England would come back putting one in the back of the net off a set piece and thought they had another. Frank Lampard put one of the cross bar and it went in then out, the assistant referee didn't have a good angle and didn't give a goal. After that it was over. England had some chances, but got hit on the break twice by some great passing on the counter attack by Germany. It ends a poor World Cup for the Brits and they will hear about it back home.

53. Argentina vs. Mexico- 3-1 Argentina

As for the picks go I am 4 for 4, and so far I have correctly picked two of the scorelines, I am pretty proud of that thank you. As for the game Argentina should thank their lucky stars because their first two goals were gifts. The first by the referees who gave the goal after a blatant offsides, and the second thanks to some poor passing in defense by Mexico. They went into half with the two goal advantaged and took a third after a wonderful strike by Carlos Tevez sending them to a 3-0 lead. After that Mexico took control but it was too late. They did create some chances, but after putting on in the back of the net they had a few denied bysome good defending at the goal line. As for Argentina they will meet Germany, and if they want to advance their goalie needs wake up it seemed like he was slow on everything and could have let in a few more goals it was surprising.

Day 15

49. South Korea vs. Uruguay- 2-1 Uruguay- as predicted by me thank you

The game started will for Uruguay and they were rewarded with an early goal after a Forlan cross that I though should have been saved by the keeper. After that South Korea seemed to dominate with quick passing and holding the possession. They couldn't find the back of the net though until the second half when a free kick was headed home and tied the game at 1. From there it still looked like South Korea would go on to win, but Uruguay's attack was too potent and they scored on a beaut of a goal from Suarez his second of the game. Uruguay would hold on for the win and move on to the quarterfinals for the first time since 1970.

50. Ghana vs. USA- 2-1 Ghana in extra time

I also predicted the winner of this one too a 2-0 record so far thank you again. As I thought Ghana proved to be too strong and their first goal showed it as Clark was dispossed and Ghana put away the first goal. The US as they have played from behind and made it close tying it with a penalty kick in the second half. Neither team could score again and it headed to extra time. And again Ghana scored quick with a nice goal Gyan, and the US's defense let them down again. After that the US really didn't have any more clear cut chances and were sent packing by the Black Stars. Ghana will now face Uruguay in the quarterfinals Friday

Knockout Stage

Day 15- Last Day of Group Stage

45. North Korea vs. Ivory Coast- 3-0 Ivory Coast

This game gave the Ivory Coast some hope to make it out of the group, but they needed 9 goals and a Portugal loss. They started off quick getting 2 goals within the first 20 minutes, and it looked like there was a chance they could pull it off. But not really they had good attacks, but their finishing let them down as they squandered chances and only got their third goal way to late in the game. Both teams were eliminated and the Ivory Coast can only hope to have this good of a team next World Cup and probably an easier group.

46. Portugal vs. Brazil- 0-0

This game looked like one of the best of the group stages, but didn't really live up to the hype. Both teams didn't look too much of a threat going forward and seemed happy to finish with a draw. Portugal knew a draw would get them through so I can see them playing for it. The game ended and both teams will be moving on from the group of death and waited to see the results of the later games to know who thay would be playing.

47. Chile vs. Spain- 2-1 Spain

This game pitted two of the more attacking sides of the tournament. the game was controlled more by Chile early, but as the goal keeper came out to clear he didn't get enough on the clearance and David Villa pounced on it and fired a shot from 45 yards that went in. After that Spain settled down and got another goal late in the first half. A red card to Chile forced them to play with 10 men for the second half, but they got a deflected shot to go in. They couldn't get their second, and would have to wait to see the result of the other game to know if they would be through.

48. Switzerland vs. Honduras- 0-0

Switzerland would need a won and a Chile loss to advance, but they couldn't find their scoring touch. Their defense was great again, but that can't always get you what you need. The goalless draw eliminated both teams and send Chile through in second place. The group stage is now over and the knockout round begins tomorrow.

Game of the Day

Game of the Day for June 25th,

- Chile vs. Spain- 2:30 pm

Yes I have missed the game of the day for a few days but I'm back and it's a good one. Spain will need a win or draw against Chile to advance, and Chile has won their first two games. Chile loves to attack, and I'm not sure their defense can hold my prediction 3-1 Spain.

Day 14

41. Slovakia vs. Italy- 3-2 Slovakia

Italy needed at least a draw to advance as long as New Zealand didn't win, which they didn't. So really the defending champions should be able to at least tie Slovakia, but Slovakia had other ideas. An early goal put Slovakia ahead and Italy didn't have an answer, and actually went down 2-0 late in the game. When they finally made a break through they were still down 2-1 and gave up a quick goal after. Up 3-1 Slovakia would give up a late goal but it didn't matter as they would be advancing anyway.

42. Paraguay vs. New Zealand- 0-0

This game doesn't have much to talk about as their were no goals, and New Zealand actually had 0 shots on goal. More like Borephyll is right, but it has to be said a more than impressive showing by the all whites of New Zealand. Going into the tournament they were expected to lose all three matches and by a lot, but they battled tough and even earned a hard fought draw against the defending champs. Paraguay wins the group with the tie and Slovakia are the runners up.

43. Cameroon vs. Netherlands- 2-1 Netherlands

Netherlands had already advanced and Cameroon had already been eliminated when the game started so yeah. The Netherlands looked sharp and flashy with a great end to end goal by Arsenal man Robin Van Persie. But Cameroon wasn't done, and would tie the game with a Samuel Eto'o penalty kick. The Netherlands were not happy with the draw though and after a shot off the post the mess was cleaned up by Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and the three points for the Netherlands.

44. Denmark vs. Japan- 3-1 Japan

This game started the knockout stage for both these teams because the winner would be the one advancing to the next round. Japan took advantage of two first half free kicks and put them both in the back of the net going up 2-0 and never looking back. Denmark would respond with one goal late in the game, but soon afte scoring they let in another and their tournament ended. Japan placed second in the group and will face Paraguay and The Netherlands wins the group and will play Slovakia.

Day 13

37. Slovenia vs. England- 1-0 England

England finally gets their win, and luckily for them advances. Fabio Capello made a decision to substitute Jermain Defoe in at striker for Heskey, and the decision paid off as Defoe slotted home a cross early in the game and England never looked back. England secured their win and Slovenia had to think they were also headed to the next round, but the US had other ideas.

38. Algeria vs. USA- 1-0 USA

The US knew what they needed out of the game to advance and it was simple win and you advance. The game was pretty back and forth, but it seemed Algeria were content to sit back some and play for the draw which would do neither team any good. The US had their chances and probably should have scored a few goals, but some misses proved otherwise. As the game was coming to a close the US got frantic in attack and finally after a nice piece of distribution by Tim Howard Landon Donovan banged home a lose ball after a save, and the rest is history.

39. Australia vs. Serbia- 2-1 Australia

This game in the end didn't mean much because neither team will go on to advance so pretty much not important. But the game was a pretty good one with chances, and some goals. Australia took the lead with a Tim Cahill goal and another goal putting them up 2-0. Serbia was able to pull one goal back, but it ended up not mattering because it was too little too late.

40. Germany vs. Ghana- 1-0 Germany

Going into this game Ghana was leading the group ahead of Germany, but that would change after. The game had some chances the best ones by Germany, but they scored on one that wasn't even a clear cut chance. Mesut Ozil, my favorite player of the tournament so far, scored from outside the box with a left footed strike. The goal gave them the three points and the win. Germany advances and will play England Sunday, and Ghana will play the US Saturday.

Wednesday, June 23, 2010

Day 12

33. Mexico vs. Uruguay- 1-0 Uruguay

Going into this game both Mexico and Uruguay would advance being first and second in the group. And the game ended with the same result, both teams advance. Uruguay won group A with the win, and Mexico placed second beating South Africa on goal difference. The game was mainly Mexico's as they controlled possession and had many chances, but it only took one for Uruguay who scored on a late first half header and help their defense strong. Pretty much this game was whoever wins doesn't have to play Argentina and Uruguay made it through.

34. South Africa vs. France- 2-1 South Africa

Finally the tournament is over for France, being a French fan I can just say I'm glad it is over. I will talk about the whole France debacle later in a post, but still in this game they had the quality to win. The game turned when the referee gave a red card to France for what I thought was maybe a yellow card. After that South Africa brought men forward and took a 2-0 lead. When France finally made some good substitutions they looked more promising and got their first goal of the tournament and luckily will be going home.

35. Greece vs. Argentina- 2-0 Argentina

Maybe Argentina were trying to get Greece through to the next round because they replaced seven of their starters. But still they won. Argentina still had the quality to win and controlled the game having many more chances, and finally capitalized late in the game knocking home a lose corner, then again scoring a late goal. Argentina has won all three of their games and moves into the next round with mounds of momentum and will face Mexico in the knockout stages.

36. South Korea vs. Nigeria- 2-2

This game was pretty exciting, and could have ended much differently. To start the game all Nigeria needed was to win and have Argentina win to make it to the knockout stages. It started nicely for them as they scored an early goal, but a little shaky defending allowed South Korea to tie the game. Then into the second half South Korea scored again looking like it would end Nigeria's tournament. But Nigeria weren't done, and had one of the easiest tap ins to tie the game and some how it was put wide, but a few minutes later they were given a penalty and tied the game. They wouldn't get any more chances and were left to wonder what could have been as South Korea advances and will play Uruguay in the round of 16.

Biggest Jump- Paraguay- 11
Biggest Drop- Switzerland 8

Game of the Day

Game of the day for June 22nd

- Nigeria vs South Korea- 2:30 pm

Nigeria has lost both games, but still will advance with a win and an Argentina win against Greece, both are very likely. But you never know it can get crazy.

Day 11

30. Portugal vs. North Korea- 7-0 Portugal

Yeah not much to say about this one Portugal made it into the next round with those goals.

31. Switzerland vs. Chile- 1-0 Chile

This game was quite chippy and again we saw a red card for Behrami of Switzerland, after he was flailing his arms around hitting everyone in the face. After that it was Chile's to win and Switzerland made it tough on them, but in the 75th minute Chile broke through with a goal. After that Switzerland had a clear cut chance and should have equalized, but they left points on the table and will have to get a win against Honduras and some help to advance.

32. Spain vs. Honduras- 2-0 Spain

Spain is back on track with a win against Honduras. David Villa scored both goals, and should have had 3 but missed a penalty wide, the second missed penalty of the tournament. With the win Spain moves back into second place in Group H, with a better goal difference than Switzerland, going into the last games. Spain will be playing Chile and need points to hold off Switzerland who should get a win against Honduras and everyone will be trying to not get second and have to play Brazil in the next round.

Day 10

27. Slovakia vs. Paraguay- 2-0 Paraguay

This one went pretty much how I figured Paraguay seems to be poised to make it to the knockout stage, and who knows about Slovakia. In the game Paraguay was too big strong and experienced, and scored early and finished it off late. Now Paraguay sets themselves up to wont the group against the weakest team in the group in New Zealand.

28. Italy vs. New Zealand- 1-1

Um yeah I don't know what to say about this one, but I am rooting for Slovakia in the last game. Italy again did not look good and were lucky to get their one goal on a flop penalty. They are just lucky they are in the easiest and weakest group in the World Cup.

29. Brazil vs. Ivory Coast- 3-1 Brazil

This game was a little bit of a joke. I mean Brazil had a couple good goals, and the other one was a handball, but the end of the game was where it got funny. I mean I know diving and flopping happens but Brazil started to take to too far and anytime someone was touched they went down like they were shot, it was a disgrace. I don't even blame the Ivory Coast player for getting the second yellow card on Kaka because please kaka was flopping all day and I know it was frustrating for the Ivory coast players because they are stronger and more physical. Yes Brazil is in the next round I can only hope they have to play Spain in the first round and lose

Saturday, June 19, 2010

Game of the Day

Game of the Day for June 20th

-Brazil vs. Ivory Coast- 2:30 pm

This game is a big one for the group of death. After a tie against Portugal Ivory Coast will be looking to get some point from Brazil and have a chance of making it out of the group, It will be a tough task and may depend on if Drogba plays. Prediction 1-1 Draw

Day 9

24. Netherlands vs. Japan- 1-0 Netherlands

This game was not as close as the scoreline indicates, the Netherlands controlled the game from the start. Japan was playing very defensive hoping to get a draw out of the game, and did a pretty good job defending. The Netherlands controlled possession and were overall solid and got their goal in the second half off a shot that probably should have been saved by the Japanese goalie. Netherlands becomes the second team along with Argentina to win their opening two games and looked solid enough to get the points and closer to making it out of the group in first.

25. Australia vs. Ghana- 1-1

This game really should have been Ghana's after Australia scored early on another goal keeping mistake, Ghana was awarded a penalty. The penalty came after a scramble in Australia's end and a shot that would have been a goal was saved on the line by a defender's arm giving Ghana its second penalty kick and Australia's second red card of the tournament. Gyan converted the penalty but Ghana still couldn't muster another goal even with Australia down to 10 men. Australia performed well down a man for more time in the tournament than they have been full strength. With the tie Australia still has a chance to advance going into the final game against Serbia.

26. Cameroon vs. Denmark- 2-1 Denmark

One of the teams I had advancing is now out of the tournament after Cameroon fell to Denmark this afternoon. This came was back and forth with some shaky defending for both sides, but Cameroon failed to capitalize on the mistakes by Denmark's defense. With the loss Cameroon is eliminated from the tournament and going into the last games of the group Netherlands is leading with 6 points and should qualify first, and with Japan and Denmark tied with 3 points each and playing each other it will decided the second team to make it out of the group, should be interesting.

Game of the Day

Game of the Day for June 19th

1. Cameroon vs. Denmark- 2:30 pm

Tomorrow I am picking 2 games for the game of the day more like games of the day. The first is Cameroon vs. Denmark, and it is two teams who lost their first games of the tournament, but will be still looking to advance whoever wins this one will have the better chance. Prediction- 1-0 Cameroon

2. Ghana vs. Australia- 10:00 am

This is a big game in Group D, as I said before Ghana will be looking to go top of the group with a win, but Australia will be looking to even the group up at 3 points a piece. Should be good one. Prediction- 2-1 Ghana

Friday, June 18, 2010

Day 8

21. Serbia vs. Germany- 1-0 Serbia

This game was much like the Nigeria game yesterday with a red card pretty much deciding the game. The referee was the star of the game giving yellow cards left and right and finally a red card to Klose dealing a big blow to Germany as Serbia scored right after the card. From that point on it was Germany creating the chances and even had a penalty, but Podolski's shot was saved and as much as they tried Germany could't fight back from behind with 10 men. This now opens the group up and puts pressure on the Ghana vs. Australia game tomorrow. If Australia win the group will be all even with 3 points but if Ghana win they will be in the driver's seat with 6 points, should be a good one.

22. Slovenia vs. USA- 2-2

This game followed along with the one before it as the referee ended up deciding how the points would be divided. The US came out and again with a defensive brain fart they went down 1-0 and then again poor defending let them down and it was 2-0 at the half. It looked like the tournament was almost over for the US, but Landon Donovan came back and scored a quick goal in the second half giving the US hope. They pushed and pushed until Michael Bradley stuck one in the back of the net tying it at two and with enough time to get a third, which they did. BUt for some reason it did not count as the referee blew Edu's goal off for no apparent reason leaving the US frustrated and confused, but with still hope of advancing.

23. England vs. Algeria- 0-0

Well I guess you have to say the game is played on the field not on paper because England's superior skill should have come out on top. But in the end Algeria looked the better side throughout creating more chances and coming close. England now with another disappointing loss will face Slovenia in their final game to determine their fate. This game really opened the group up with Slovenia in first with 4 points followed by the US with 2 and England with 2 then Algeria with 1. Anyone can still advance and it will come down to the last set of games. England better how they perform better next time otherwise it will be a huge disappointment for a soccer crazed nation, it would be kinda funny though.

Thursday, June 17, 2010

Game of the Day

Game of the Day for June 18th

- USA vs. Slovenia- 10

This game is pretty much do or die for the US. Slovenia is leading the group after beating Algeria and a win will pretty ensure they will finish ahead of the US. For me a tie won't due and the US need to win. Prediction- 2-1 USA

Day 7

18. Argentina vs. South Korea- 4-1 Argentina

Well finally some goals were scored other than Germany's 4. As the second phase of games starts it looks like teams will be more risk taking and open up the play a little, and Argentina certainly did. A hat trick by Higuain and an own goal proved Argentina with the goals their play deserved. Argentina will just need to draw their last game against Greece to advance and they will defiantly do it.

19. Nigeria vs. Greece- 2-1 Greece

This game pretty much changed with one play, and the group standings went along with it. After Nigeria scored on a almost crazy play on a free kick a stupid red card cost them the game and pretty much their tournament. After Kaita front kicked the Greece player in the thigh out of bounds, which was so stupid, Greece took control. They got their first goal and their second after a timely goal keeping mistake. Nigeria will need to win and get a lot of help to advance and it doesn't look good.

20. Mexico vs. France- 2-0 Mexico

I was planning on watching this game online since I had to miss it, but my brother decided to ruin it and tell me what I already expected France sucked and lost. I wish I could say I didn't see it coming, but really they have been poor leading up to the World Cup and still have been poor. They should just bring in the new coach now, this team has too much talent to be losing and not scoring. Now France needs to win and get a lot of help, pretty much neither will happen it looks like Uruguay and Mexico out of Group A.

Wednesday, June 16, 2010

Game of the Day

Game of the Day for June 17th

- France vs. Mexico- 2:30 pm

Tomorrow is more of a light schedule for good games, there are good teams playing but not each other. So this is my pick, pretty much after this game we will have a clear view of who will advance from group A. And yes I will say it go FRANCE or ALLEZ LES BLEUS.

Day 6

15. Chile vs. Honduras- 1-0 Chile

It has been a long time coming for Chile who wont their first World Cup game in 48 years. Chile brought its attack first side into this World Cup and it resulted in the win, but they should have had a few more goals to show for it. Playing Honduras who is now ranked last in my new rankings, should have been a bigger win for Chile. But as many have seen this World Cup seems to be tighter and lower scoring benefiting more of the defensive sides. This could spell trouble for the attacking teams, mostly Chile, and we will see how they respond next match.

16. Switzerland vs. Spain- 1-0 Switzerland

Well, what can I say other than I am kinda upset this was the first matched I haven't been able to watch due to a doctor's appointment. But I will tell you what I think and this was a big upset no matter how you put it. Since I didn't see it I won't talk about what happened too much, but I will say I moved Switzerland up so far in the rankings because as I see it results matter, my brother says Spain looked better but as my girlfriend says "but they beat them" and I agree so up they move. Spain should rebound and win, but they may not win the group now and could be facing Brazil in the first round of the knockout stage, all I can say is I'm glad I didn't pick them to win.

17. South Africa vs Uruguay- 3-0 Uruguay

This game will help clear up the tight group A with Uruguay earning 3 points they will have a very good chance making it out of the group now. Depending on the results of tomorrow's France and Mexico game. As for the game it was not too exciting Forlán hit a shot that deflected off a defender and dropped right into the goal not too bad, and after the goalie took down Suárez and got a red card. Forlán again took his chance and slotted home the penalty and Uruguay added another late goal, the last goal could prove to be good for the if it comes down to goal difference. As for South Africa it doesn't look good for them and they will probably be the first host team to not make it out of their group, a shame I guess.

Updated Rankings

Now that each team has played one game so far in the tournament I guess it is time to update my rankings. Previous rankings in parentheses.

32. Honduras (27)

Biggest Drop- Greece- 13

Day 5

12. Slovakia vs. New Zealand- 1-1

This was another early game that was tough to get up for. Two teams I do not fancy to make it out of their group and I had New Zealand ranked last in my rankings. The game was surprising, after Slovakia scored in the second half I figured it was over and they had their 3 points. New Zealand didn't go away though and capitalized scored on a header which was basically the last play of the game a crazy end to the game tying all the teams in Group F with 1 point, it's anyone's game.

13. Ivory Coast vs Portugal- 0-0

This game was the game of the day and I guess it lived up to it, I mean it was close. I was a little disappointed that Drogba didn't start the game and figured because of that Ivory Coast was in trouble. Portugal hardly created any chances only a Ronaldo shot off the post was the only time I thought they had a chance to score. The game was a little slow and even when Drogba came on there weren't many scoring chances so I guess it didn't live up to the hype.

14. Brazil vs. North Korea- 2-1 Brazil

Brazil was heavily favored in this one and I thought that North Korea was going to be a little tougher than everyone expected, and was right. North Korea is a mystery to most teams and they had a defensive strategy that almost netted them a point. After a 0-0 tie at the half Brazil finally scored 2 goals and only a last minute goal from North Korea could make it closer. This game pretty much stated the obvious, who ever gets a better result against Brazil will get out of the group of death alive.

Monday, June 14, 2010

Game of the Day

Game of the day for Tuesday June 15th

-Ivory Coast vs. Portugal- 10:00 am

This game is a big one for the group of death, and depending on the result it could determine who comes out of this group along with Brazil. This is an interesting one because I don't think Portugal is as good as everyone thinks, and African teams usually disappoint so because of that my prediction is 1-1 draw.

Day 4

9. Nehterlands vs. Denmark- 2-0 Netherlands

This game was another early one, and it took a little bit to get going. I was expecting The Netherlands to come out quick and get ahead and not let up but Denmark was up for the task. The Dutch finally scored on an own goal of a defenders back, I guess you take them however you can. Then as the game was wrapping up they got their second goal and closed out the win for all 3 points.

10. Japan vs. Cameroon- 1-0 Japan

This one was a little bit of a surprise for me I did not see it going this way. Cameroon struggled to amount much of an attack other than a rare chance here or there and Japan capitalized and score the only goal of the game putting Cameroon's chances of getting out of the group not too good, and I don't see them making it with two tougher teams left to play.

11. Italy vs. Paraguay- 1-1

This game was a rainy one and almost an upset, but the defending champs battled back for the draw. In the first half Paraguay struck first with a header. The second half got a little more interesting with maybe Italy's best player Buffon the goal keeper coming off with an injury, but it was Paraguay's goalie who changed the game. In a bad move he came out and wiffed on a corner and De Rossi headed it in. This game didn't surprise me too much I figured Italy would struggle this cup but both these teams should make it out of the group.

Game of the Day

Game of the day for June 14

-Netherlands vs. Denmark- 7:30 am

This game may not be one of the best for the tournament, but it is the most interesting for tomorrow. The Netherlands will be playing a Denmark team who excelled in qualifying, and will be looking to have a successful World Cup. But if this one turns out like I think it will, it will end in a Netherlands win my prediction 3-0 Netherlands.

Day 3

6. Algeria vs. Slovenia- 1-0 Slovenia

Man these games are a little early for me but I got up and watched this one, and a big one for the US's future. The other two teams in group C battled it out this morning and the nation with the smallest population in the World Cup came out on top on a late goal. And I might say that was some bad goal keeping by the Algeria keeper, plus a bad haircut. Algeria had some chances, and a man sent off for a silly handball, what was he thinking its not like everyone was going to see it and you were going to get a red card. Well after this game it makes the US's next game against Slovenia on Friday all that much more important as Slovenia leads the group with 3 points to US and England's 1 point each.

7. Serbia vs. Ghana- 1-0 Ghana

The next game for the day was a pretty good one, with Ghana missing some key players but they didn't show it. Serbia was supposed to be some peoples sleeper pick but at times they just looked asleep as Ghana had more of the chances and possession early. As the game progressed it looked more and more like it was going to end in a draw, but another careless handball changed that. A stupid handball in the box gave Ghana a penalty kick and Asamoah Gyan delivered the goods giving Ghana all they would need to become the first African team to win on African soil.

8. Germany vs. Australia- 4-0 Germany

Well this game was not as close as I thought it would be, but I'm not too mad about it seeing as I picked Germany to make it to the final. The game from the beginning was dominated by the Germans scoring two early goals and never looking back. Australia packed the midfield and defense with players looking to grind out a draw, but Germany was too good in attack and after Tim Cahill was sent off in the second half with and iffy red card Germany poured it on. Their youth proved too much and they put on a show in front of a big crowd.

Game of the Day

Game of the Day for Sunday June 13th

Germany vs. Australia

This is a big game for what to look for from Germany and Australia, who are trying to add to their promising performances at the last World Cup, should be a good one my predictions Germany wins 2-1.

Day 2

3. South Korea vs Greece- 2-0 South Korea

I got up early for this match and was not too excited about the match up, but the game was alright, and took me by surprise. Greece just looked pretty bad and deserved to lose by two. The second goal was almost a gift from Greece after some bad passing in the defense. I was a little surprised how South Korea played, and we will have to see how they follow this performance up in their game against Argentina, something tells me that it won't be as positive.

4. Argentina vs. Nigeria- 1-0 Argentina

The second game to me looked a little more interesting and provided a good game overall with many missed chances. Argentina scored on a early header in the sixth minute and that would prove all they would need to get the 3 points. As the game progressed Argentina pretty much controlled most of the game with chances coming pretty often and if not for some good goal keeping for Nigeria this game could have ended up worse than the final score line. Nigeria will have to respond with a win against Greece if they want to have a chance to advance out of the group.

5. England vs. USA- 1-1

Well this game had lots and lots of hype and pretty much everyone who doesn't care about soccer other than for a few games during the World Cup were watching. The game started and the US were caught on a defensive lapse and conceded a early goal putting them down 1-0. After they settled down some they got some chances and were handed a goal after a blunder by England goal keeper Robert Green, and yes it was pretty funny. Into the second half England had numerous chances but the US stood strong and almost took the lead when Jozy Altidore had his shot saved on to the post. The US then pressed forward and had some chances near the end, but the game ended a draw giving each team one point.

Game of the Day

Hmmm I wonder what I should pick for the game of the day tomorrow? I'm pretty sure i would be killed if I didn't make this pick.

Saturday June 12 Game of the Day

-U.S.A vs. England

Everyone is looking forward to this one and I am a little nervous for the US but I think they can make a good showing for themselves tomorrow. I was very tempted to pick Nigeria vs. Argentina because I think that will be a very good game so lets make that game 1a. enjoy.

Day 1

So the tournament finally kicked off today after months and months of waiting, so lets get into it.

1. Mexico vs. South Africa- 1-1

The opening game pitted the host nation against Mexico, and to start the game South Africa looked very shaky with Mexico being very aggressive. They probably should have scored early, but South Africa weathered the storm and took it into halftime tied 0-0. The second half was a little more lively, with the hosts getting on the scoreboard first after some slick passing Siphiwe Tshabalala, yeah that is a real name, hit a smashing goal into the top corner and had some nice dance moves after. But Mexico wouldn't be denied a point and came back with a goal by Rafa Márquez after the South African defense misplayed the offsides trap. The game ended as I though in a draw and both teams taking a point.

2. Uruguay vs. France- 0-0

This one was a little bit of a snoozer, and I will admit that even being a France fan. Uruguay came out with five players in defense with two midfielders right above them making there little room for France to do much in terms of attacking. Other than a missed chance by Sidney Govou on a Franck Ribery cross there was not much to talk about in the first half. The second half was more of the same a good chance was missed by Diego Forlán for Uruguay and not much for France and it ended 0-0. I must say I could coach France better than Raymond Domenech, his squad selection, substitutions, and formation were quite bad and good thing he will be gone after the World Cup because it may be over sooner than later.

And so it begins

Tomorrow the World Cup finally starts so I know everyone is very excited like I am. Each day I am going to try and watch every game and give my thoughts on them. Also the day before I will be picking the game of the day.

Game of the day for Friday June 11

-South Africa vs. Mexico

It's the first game of the tournament and an interesting one, will South Africa be the first host nation to not advance out the group stage, or will they use their home field advantage and work some magic. It all begins tomorrow so I guess we will find out. SPORTS

Final

So here it is the final yeah I'm crazy no Brazil or Spain but I can feel them choking.

-Netherlands vs. Germany- 2-0 Netherlands

Yep there it is Netherlands win their first cup and for the record I predicted this weeks ago and Alexi Lalas just copied me today on the preview show, he isn't even cool enough to be a plain Alex.

Semifinals

I'll get right to is sorry but Brazil is gone so here we go.

-France vs. Netherlands- 3-1 Netherlands

-Germany vs. Spain- 2-2 Germany wins on PKS

No. 1 Spain

FIFA Ranking- 2

Group H

And then there was one and to me it has to be Spain, they virtually have no weakness and as I see it the only one could be injuries. They have solid goal keeping, a good defense, a glut of star midfielders, and two of the best strikers in the World. After their performance winning Euro 2008 they will look to get even better on the biggest stage. Really there isn't much else to say they're real good.

No. 2 Netherlands

FIFA Ranking- 4

Group E

This one may come as a little bit of a surprise, but I think this may be the year for the Netherlands, who are sort of the lovable losers. They always come into big tournaments playing beautiful football and dazzle everyone, but end up losing when it comes to the knockout stage. During qualifying they went undefeated with an 8-0-0 record, and gave up the fewest goals of any European World Cup team. The knock on the Netherlands is their defense, which I will admit is not the most intimidating back line, but if they can continue to play smart and strong they will be the backbone for this team. Look for them to breeze through their group and look strong going into the knockout stages where they will be looking to win their first cup.

No. 3 Brazil

FIFA Ranking- 1

Group G

Yes Brazil is one of the favorites coming into the World Cup I believe they are considered co-favorites with Spain, but they find themselves at number three in my rankings for now. Yes they are Brazil and have stars all over the field, and their coach Dunga has preached defense and it has paid off. With a strong back line and goalie, goals against them are scarce. They also have attacking power with Kaka and Luis Fabiano, and as the U.S. found out last summer in the confederations cup no deficit is too big for them. They will have a tougher group to get out of, but they really should have no problem and will be looking for their sixth World Cup title, the most of any country.

Monday, June 7, 2010

No. 4 Argentina

FIFA Ranking- 7

Group B

Argentina comes into the World Cup with legendary player Diego Maradona at the helm as their coach, hoping that he can provide inspiration to the team. While he may have not fared as well as the country may have liked during qualifying he has an array of talent to choose from. With Lionel Messi and Carlos Tevez up front providing goals they will not be in any need of attacking power. They even have Sergio Augero and Gonzalo Higuain coming off the bench, meaning they will be relying heavily on their attack with question marks surrounding their defense. If the defense can pull it together and provide some support they will be able to advance deep into the tournament.

No. 5 Germany

FIFA Ranking- 6

Group D

Germany may be one of the teams no one is talking about this year, you hear all about England, Spain, Brazil, and Argentina but nothing about Germany. I think they are being overlooked and are poised to do very well this year. While they will be without captain Michael Ballack they have the quality to fill in, while it may not be in they way of big name stars there is something about them I can't put my finger on that makes me think they will once again do well. They went into Euro 2008 without much expectations and ended up losing in the final to Spain, and in 2006 at the World Cup, in Germany, they made it to the semis losing to eventual champions Italy. While they may not have the star power this year there is something about Germany in big tournaments.

No. 6 England

FIFA Ranking- 8

Group C

England comes into the World Cup with high expectations, well I think they always have high expectations and usually they disappoint, I'm just saying. They claim to be a new team destined for success under new coach Fabio Capello, and he led them through an easy qualifying. They didn't qualify for Euro 2008 and disappointed last World Cup, so who says they won't do it again. They have questions marks in defense with Rio Ferdinand injured and John Terry in decline. Realistically the team will depend on Wayne Rooney and how well he is playing, if he is scoring goals as he was during his season at Man U they could make a deep run, but if the long season wore on him they could just end up disappointing again.

No. 7 Italy

FIFA Ranking- 5

Group F

Lately I have been re-thinking putting Italy this high, I think they are too old and slow to do much this year. Although you never know, last World Cup no one thought much of Italy and they ended up winning the whole thing, so I guess I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt only because they are the reigning champions. Another thing they have going for them is being in one of the easiest groups, barring disaster they will make it to the second round and make some magic. Leaving some of their more skilled players off the team I think will hurt them in the end and their age will show after the group stage leaving them to relinquish the trophy, maybe i should have ranked them lower, oh well.

Thursday, June 3, 2010

No. 8 France

FIFA Ranking- 10

Group A

Yes France was "handed" a spot in the World Cup by Thierry Henry, but hey if it's not called it's not cheating. Say what you want about France, but they are in and there isn't anything anyone can do about it. Now about the team, they are an enigma, they are immensely talented but sometimes barely produce on the field. Many people blame it on their coach Raymond Domenech, and it really might be, but with all their talent if they can find the switch and it all clicks they could make an improbable run deep in the tournament again this year. Les Bleus are my favorite team in the tournament along with the US, and I may be ranking them a little higher, but I believe they have the talent to overcome their coaching and turn some heads.

No. 9 Portugal

FIFA Ranking- 3

Group G

Yes Portugal is ranked third by FIFA, but I think they have too many holes to be ranked that high on my list. Many people see the team and think that it is all Christiano Ronaldo, and while that might not be true it is still close to it. They have a solid defense and above average midfield with other scoring threats including Nani and Deco. This leaves their one glaring weakness, a lack of a top flight striker to get them goals. They only averaged 1.6 goals per game in qualifying a number that needs to be higher if they want to progress far in the tournament. If they can find a true scoring threat then they would be ranked higher, but until they prove it to me they will stay down here.

No. 10 USA

FIFA Ranking- 14

Group C

It's time for the top 10 and starting it out is the US who enter this World Cup much like last, with high expectations. They have the make up of a squad who is primed for a breakout starting with solid goal keeping in Tim Howard. After a historic win over Spain in last years Confederations Cup the US is looking to build on that performance and they will have to do it without Charlie Davies a main piece in their Confederations Cup success. They bring a solid midfield made up of veterans Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey along with rising star Michael Bradley. With a recent injury to Jozy Altidore the attack may be lacking without his strength and goal scoring abilities. Still the team is poised to make it out of their group and live up to the expectations.

Wednesday, June 2, 2010

No. 11 Ivory Coast

FIFA Ranking- 27

Group G

Well the Elephants are ranked 27th by FIFA but they are too talented to be ranked that low by me. They have one of the best strikers in the world Didier Drogba, speedy attacker Salomon Kalou and that is just their attack. With the brother due of Kolo and Yaya Toure and other stars like Emanuel Eboue (a fine dancer if you were wondering) they will be looking to live up to their potential, which is immense. They disappointed in the African Cup of Nations this winter, but if they can put it all together they have a chance to be the first African winner, which would be a victory for the hosting continent.

No. 12 Mexico

FIFA Ranking- 17

Group A

Mexico is coming into the World Cup having struggled some during qualifying. They changed coaches and qualified second in Concacaf behind the U.S. And they find themselves in a favorable situation at the World Cup. They were drawn into one of the easier groups and have a good chance to make it our of their group. They will be relying on 36 year old Cuauhtemoc Blanco to provide much of their goal scoring, but have some youngsters who will be looking to live up to their potential. Giovani dos Santos and Carlos Vela (who has the same birthday as me, just saying) will be looking to fill their potential that they showed by performing well for Mexico at the U17 World Cup. The soccer crazed nation will be looking for for the team to live up to potential and succeed at the World Cup

No. 13 Chile

FIFA Ranking- 15

Group H

La Roja went through a transition period after the 2007 Copa America tournament, and the change that made the most impact was their new coach. Marcelo Bielsa is the new coach and surprisingly he is from Argentina which seems weird seeing that they are rivals, but his sucess so far he has produced results. He tried out new players and found the right mixture that fit his attacking style. They qualified second in the South American region, but they have a glaring weakness, their defense. They gave up 22 goals during qualifying and need to find a solution to that problem if they think they are going to advance far. They have flashy and effective attackers and a solid goal keeper making them a dangerous underdog for the big teams out there.

Tuesday, June 1, 2010

No. 14 Cameroon

FIFA Ranking 19

Group E

The Indomitable Lions have had the most success of any African team qualifying for the World Cup making to to six of the past eight cups, but have not been able to muster up much else. They have only won one game since 1990, but this year may be different. They have always had a strong defense and a talented midfield, but they have had trouble scoring goals in the past. This year they feature Samuel Eto'o one of the best strikers around, but he has recently threatened to walk out on the team after receiving criticism from a former player. If Eto'o can get past the criticism and play like his normal self the Lions can make a run in the tournament, but that is a lot of ifs.

No. 15 Serbia

FIFA Ranking 16

Group D

Serbia is entering their first World Cup on its own apart from that Montenegro, and who needs it because Serbia qualified without them. Last World Cup they competed as one even though they declared independence on the eve of the World Cup. They qualified first in their European qualifying group, one which include France. They are usually know for their rock solid defense, but a new coach as revitalized the attack while maintaining their defensive prowess. They were supposed to be the dark horse at the last World Cup but it seems like they are more likely to fit that bill this time with a good chance to make it out of their group.

No. 16 Uruguay

FIFA Ranking- 18

Group A

Uruguay is heading to the World Cup with high expectations from their home country, this is because as many people may not know they have won the World Cup twice. They have won the World Cup but realistically they won those in 1930 and 1950, so really I don't see what they are all worked up about. They find themselves in one of the easier groups, but I still do not think they will be making it out of the group. To qualify for the World Cup they placed 5th in their region and that left them in a playoff situation squeaking out a victory against Costa Rica. Luckily for them the World Cup isn't at home because they could be in trouble from their home fans after this year.

No. 17 Australia

FIFA Ranking 20

Group D

Australia may be ranked 20th in the FIFA rankings, but I think that has more to do with the region they play in, they do not play as many quality teams on their way tp the World Cup. In 2006 The Socceroos advanced out of their group and played Italy in the second round. They only lost to the eventual champions when Italy was given a penalty, on what I consider a dive, in stoppage time. Now they return with more experience and are ready and battle tested. They have a solid goalie, and experienced defense and midfield, their biggest obstacle will be goal scoring, if they can find the scoring touch they could build on their last performance and make the Quarterfinals.

No. 18 Greece

FIFA Ranking 12

Group B

Yeah Greece is ranked 12th in the FIFA rankings, but I'm not buying it from this team. This is their second appearance in the World Cup the other was in 1994 and they lost all three games, I will say I think they will fare better this World Cup, seeing as they have South Korea in their group. They made it to the World Cup by placing second in their qualifying group and then beating Ukraine in the playoff stage. They even had the top scorer in European qualifying, but all they still will not net them a trip out of the group, their style of play and quality of players will ultimately show them the door.
